Last year, First Baptist hosted the Getting Ahead workshop, a 16-week interactive program for folks in our community experiencing poverty.

The workshop is led by a trained facilitator and empowers participants to take new steps towards building a better future for themselves, their families, and their community.

Now, First Baptist is supporting those participants as they continue their journeys through monthly Staying Ahead meals, and a monthly meeting for graduates of the program to come together and continue with the learning and social support they began in the program.

“It’s made things clearer for me,” said one graduate, “I can see where I came from and where I’m going. And I’m going to keep going up that ladder.”

First Baptist will be hosting the Staying Ahead meals for the next several months, providing a consistent and central location for participants and facilitators to meet, share fellowship, and continue working on their goals.

Getting Ahead facilitators from Kennett Area Community Service and The Constellation Network will be organizing the meals, which are open to the 70-plus individuals in our community who have now completed the Getting Ahead program.

Community members interested in supporting the Getting Ahead graduates are now also invited to the monthly meetings, although an orientation and participation in a Bridges Out of Poverty workshop is
required first.
